OUR INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

For years the industrial revolution benefited the working man, giving him and his family the chance and opportunity to work, to earn from the increasing wealth both nationally and locally his wealth and wellbeing improved and he lived and enjoyed a long and happy life!

ENOUGH OF THE FAIRYTALES  SOMEONE CRIES

Lets get real, the working man has worked long and hard over many historical years to improve his lot. Often in perilous health threatening conditions.

The North-east has witnessed its share of industrial cange  and development, the change of technology and new materials introduced. The River Tyne and its shipyards thrived, bigger and bigger ships even oil tankers slid down the “ways”. All made safer, fire proofed and ASBESTOS lagged!

Sheet metalworkers, pipe fitters, electricians, welders, caulkers anyone who had worked with or near asbestos became high risk canditates.

MESOTHELIOMA The deadly form of lung cancer is caused by exposure to asbestos. Its deadly fibres can lie dormant from anything to 15 to 50 years but when symptoms become apparant survival is only a matter of months.

INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE?

Tyneside has lost many of its sons to this deadly disease, God forbid thaere is more to come but we know 5,000 die each year with this hideous  disease. Estimates raise this figure to 10,000 by 2020.

Bob Wolf sadly died aged 62 years in July 2008 without doubt he is very much missed by his wife, daughters, grandson and other family members. But Wolfy ( as he was known to friends and workmates) left a large gap in the liveves of all who worked and socialised with him.

Hi working life spanned many decades, he worked in many shipyards, both on and outside the Tyne.

One of his final and most prestigious job was working on the Bongo oil drilling tanker on the Tyne. Earning himself the name of Bongo BOb by workkmates and friends alike.
