The Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Maureen Chaplin

Councillor Maureen  Chaplin had recently retired from the Royal Mail after 24 years as a post woman. Prior to that she worked with people with learning disabilities at Prudhoe Hospital.It was while working as a nursing assistant at the hospital between 1971 and 1979 that she believes she was exposed to asbestos.

Despite being told the condition was terminal she launched into fundraising campaign . During her year as Mayor she nominated the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund, as her Mayoral charity.Maureens daughters, Jill and Julie along with father Bob attended the M K Research Funds annual ball in May.

Although a difficult time for the family they were proud to donate £12,000.00 in her memory. This magnificent amount will form part of the Maureen Chaplin Snowdrop Memorial Fund the family set up in her memory.

£2o0 raised by Maureen’s sister, Susan, brother in law Kevin and neice Gemma, who held a car boot sale

15th October 2009: Local milkman, Kevin Fletcher bungee jumped off Middlesborough’s Transport Bridge and raised £375.00 in Maureen’s  memory.  A fantastic effort! 

October 2009: Total£12,691.30

November 2009: Total £12,751.30

January 2010:  Maureen’s sister Sue, has continued to raise contributions towards her sister’s Memorial Fund. Sue, recently hosted a jewellery party and along with Maureen’s grandaughter Faye, who organised a fundraising treasure map between them they raised  a total of £202 towards the Fund.
